What has become of Abacha's loot?

 Late Sani Abacha
The late General Sani Abacha was Nigeria’s military head of state from from 1993 to 1998. Abacha, who ruled Nigeria for five years after a 1993 coup, is believed to have stolen $4.3bn while in office. After his death, the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo implicated Abacha and his family in a wholesale looting of Nigeria’s funds. The Nigerian government asked Switzerland to help it recover $2.2bn that he was said to have stashed in European bank accounts. In this piece the writer, Sonala Olumhense, questions if the loot stolen by Abacha while he was the military head of state has either been saved, spent or stolen urging Nigerians to ask what has become of the funds. Calling the court of law and Nigerians who want to know what he did with the money he recovered, “stupid,” he dignified his critics with some wisdom last week. “I don’t keep account,” he said. “All Abacha loots were (sic) sent to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and every bit of it was reported to Minister of Finance…If they want to know what happened to the money, they should call CBN governor or call the Minister of Finance!” Let’s take a look at the timeline of the Abacha loot To begin with, here is a general timeline of the Abacha loot story: – May 29, 1999: Obasanjo takes office

Nigeria terror leader Shekau reappears looking defeated: is the end near for Boko Haram?

Shekau in a past photo. He appeared on video for the first time in more than a year on Thursday, rejecting rumours about his death but appearing to signal his time in charge of the Nigerian jihadist group may be coming to an end. (Photo/AFP).
A military source in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, in northeast Nigeria, told AFP: “Watching Shekau in this video, the message is clear: the game is over.

“For this arrogant and boastful terrorist to speak in such a meek and subdued tone shows he has been trounced beyond his imagination.

“It is a farewell video.”

Unlike messages from the Islamists at the end of 2014 and start of 2015, which were slickly edited and closely resembled those of the Islamic State group, the new video was poorly shot.

It was also posted on YouTube rather than via Twitter accounts linked to IS supporters and websites used by fellow jihadists, which had become Boko Haram’s preferred medium of communication.

The bearded Shekau, who looked thin, spoke to his followers in front of a lime green background, with the Boko Haram black flag superimposed in crude graphics.

He also makes no mention of the Islamic State or Islamic State in West Africa province (ISWAP) and uses the group’s original name “Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad” or “People committed to the propagation of the Prophet’s teachings and jihad”.

There was no indication of when or where the video was shot and Nigeria’s military said it was trying to determine its authenticity.
